So, when am I opening. A lot of people have asked me that over the past few months. Even before I had a lease signed, people were wondering why the new guy was taking so long! Well, if you don't feel like reading all of this, just scroll to the bottom to get a few answers on what's happening at the former Hickory Hut. Otherwise, I'd like to tell you a bit about how we came to be opening a restaurant in Tusket NS.
It was almost 5 years ago today that I sold my first restaurant. 308 South by Tarek's was a short-lived restaurant on Quinpool Rd., that punched above its weight. Taking my Acadian, and Syrian roots, and putting them together in our small kitchen, Josette and I brought a little bit of home to Halifax NS. Where else but our spot could you find rappie pie, and chicken kebabs on the same plate? People enjoyed the Acadian tradition, and the Mediterranean flavours. Now, 5 years after the sale of that unique space, we're excited to be bringing some of our Halifax experience to Yarmouth.
Last week I signed a lease to take over the former Hickory Hut Restaurant space. Located just off Exit 33 on Highway 103, the location couldn't be better. My partner Josette and I grew up just down the road in Sluice Point, and had our first jobs across the way at the Tusket Ultramart. I've always been happiest when I was working close to home, and working in Tusket feels just like working from home! There's still a lot of work to do, and plenty of hoops to jump through, but we're really looking forward to bringing some great, affordable food to the Tusket area!
So, now what you've been waiting for, here's the answer to some of the questions people have been asking:
When are we opening? Well, now that the lease is signed, things can begin moving - if all goes smooth, we hope to be open mid to late June 2017. We want to build Tusket the restaurant it deserves, and we'd rather take our time and get things right than rush and have to learn from what would probably be some pretty expensive mistakes!
What kind of food will we be serving? La Tchuisine wants to make sure its customers always leave satisfied. When we first open, we'll be focused on the breakfast and lunch needs of the people living and working in and around Tusket. Our restaurant will have a good mix of local favourites, and flavours from outside the area. The freshest fish will be served with fresh fried potatoes. Unique and filling salads will be available daily as a Grab and Go option for the busy person on the go. Hot sandwiches with homemade gravy, healthy and delicious soups, and unique wraps and sandwiches will all have a home on our menu.
At its core, La Tchuisine will always have a diverse and changing mix of Grab and Go options, hot and quick takeout, a clean and bright dining room, and a focus on affordability and quality. Meeting your food needs is what we'll be about.
Will you be open early/late? People in our communities are always working - morning, noon, and night. To do our best to meet the needs of the early morning crowd, La Tchuisine will be open Mon-Fri at 6am. We're still figuring out our evening hours, but will definitely be available for take out until at least 6pm Monday-Wednesday, and later Thursday-Saturday.
